| | (Post a comment) » 3D Performance with Oblivion: Part 2 Mainstream CardsLast week we took a look at Oblivion's performance with the latest high-end graphics cards and found that ATI's Radeon X1900 XTX delivers the best overall performance. But what if you don't have $500 to spend for a graphics card? That's where today's article comes in! We've rounded up the latest mainstream graphics card offerings from ATI and NVIDIA, as well as including the GeForce 6600 GT and 6800 GT. In addition, we also answer the question if 512MB of graphics memory really makes a difference in performance. Yup, I totally agree. A victory indoors means little. Unless
someone is going to change their graphics details every time they go
inside and again when they go outside, then they are going to be
tweaking their system to remain playable in the foliage. And of
course, at those settings the mountains and indoors will have higher
fps.
For these reasons, IMO, the 1800GTO absolutely creams the 7600GT for
Oblivion. They are fairly even in many other games though.

I'm assuming that people generally don't worry about whether they
are getting 60 vs. 70 FPS but they are concerned about 25 vs. 35
FPS. Personally I'm not worried about indoor performance - even my
x850XT gets 70FPS inside. Outdoors can be a different matter.

Well it would depend I would say looking at all the results is
presenting a better picture then just looking a foilage, what if
your playing patterns have you not visiting the outdoors as often as
indoors at least this way we can see how the graphics card can fare
in different scenarios.
X1800 GTO is the card for Oblvion if you can get it for only
marginally more then 7600 GT or equal in price.

What I think is a fair statement is that if you are only buying for
Oblivion you should only care about Foliage performance. Everything
else will be higher obviously.

Re: X1800GTO
I hope you guys aren't reading too much into the GTO's
"victory". First and foremost, the results presented, are
only valid in this game, with those settings. Who knows what would
happen if you use the max quality settings or any others.. it wasn't
tested, so its pure speculation.
I noticed you are all looking at the X1800GTO as
"glass-full". Looking at the mountain and indoor results,
one would think that all the extra money spent on the GTO (over the
7600GT), was a waste. And, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the
price difference. The 7600GT can easily be found for $200, and even
$170.
The guess the one big important lesson learned from this review, is
that its not sufficient to evaluate an expensive video card purchase
by just one benchmark at one setting. If firingsquad only did indoor
benchmark, everybody would have rushed to stores to get a 7600GT.
Similarly, if firingsquad only did foliage benchmark, everybody
would rush to scores to get X1800GTO.
So, as you see, the outcome of benchmarks, not only depends on which
video card, but also which benchmark.

fair enough, though I think the x1800 gto would have fared much
better than the 6800 GT. Whish we could see.
And even if the GTX had a lead over the x1800 gto with the higher
settings, the lead should be MUCH greater than it would likely be
for a 300+ dollar premium, but I suppose the highest of the highest
end are never the best buys.

The GTO looks to offer alot for the money in this game. Newegg had
a HIS X1800GTO for $199 after rebate. That's where this card needs
to be priced as 256MB X1800XT's are as low as $270 now making a $250
GTO a lousy buy.

As soon as you start changing settings, don't even think about
directly comparing framerates. In no way can you compare 7900GTX
results in the high end chart to X1800GTO results in the mainstream
article.
If you want to compare between charts, look at the 6800GT as it's in
both charts. Looking at foliage 10x7 with HDR, the 6800GT scores 18
fps in the main stream chart and 11 fps in the high end chart.
Pretty obvios the reduced detail settings of the mainstream charts
makes a signifcant differnce.

X1800GTO is a seriously better buy over the 7600GT.
While the 7600GT has better performance in the 'indoor' test,
framerates in that test tend to be on the high side anyway.
X1800GTO is giving good performance across the line. It has high
enough framerates in the 'indoor' test but it's kicking 7600GT's @%&
in the rest, specially concerning minimum framerates. Minimum
framerates are always +30 for the X1800GTO while the same can not be
said about the 7600GT.
In the end the actual game experience on the X1800GTO will be much
better since super high framerates don't matter for this game but
having good lows do.
About the 6800GT ... well it's no surprice to me that it's
performing badly. nVidia architectures tend to perform very
competitive when they are released but over time the ATI
counterparts starts to distant themself. The X800/6800 results are a
nice example. The same will happen over time with X1900/7900. ATI
tends to make their designs more future proof. Even without SM3.0,
the X850XT will be like twice as fast as the 6800ultra in this game.
Also remember R300/nv35. Both where almost as fast in their time but
if you would compare them now ...

"And go to the foliage test for each, granted, some of the
settings
were lowered for the mainstream cards, but the x1800 gto is BEATING
the 7900 gtx, I mean, that is just sad. Not by much, but for GODS
Sakes! It shouldn't be beating it at ALL!!!! It costs over TWICE
as much!!!! And THIS is the most stressful area...."
Well, yes, but, there's a massive, massive difference in the scenes
rendered in this test vs the high-end one. It's not even remotely
comparable. I'd guess if they re-ran the high-end tests with the
mainstream .ini, you'd see the GTX beating the GTO by quite a way.
But then who spends £400 on a video card just to turn all the
bells and whistles off?
