-Graphics in the levels are THE MOST detailed I've seen.(and I've played a lot of FPS's!)
-The voice acting is ONE OF the best I've heard.
-The story is good, and twisted.
-AI is OK, they run when they're low on health.
-Atmosphere is unique in the underwater 50's city.

-Almost zero Cinematics, 95% of the story is told during the gameplay, or thru voice recordings.
-The weapon balance sucks.
-not enough enemy varity

Bioshock would have been amazing if it didn't have MAJOR gameplay im-balance issues. It thus does not deserve a average of 90+%. If you look at the point I'm about to make, you will agree.
Th weapons are not balanced and ruined the gameplay. Reviewers mostly miss this part, most of them including FS. If there is a single weapon that overpowers all weapons, and a weapon that can kill so easily, the game's fun factor decreases by a very large factor.
Basically once you souped out your wrench. I.e. (upgraded with boxing glove, and and boxing glove+, freezing wrench, electrocute enemies after getting hit) Most of your other weapons are useless in most situations. I souped it out less than half way thru. I can kill most splicers with 2 wrench hits, given they hit me once(i'd automatically electrocute them), I can go thru 5-10 splicers using 1 med kit. With a machine gun, it'd take way longer and i'd use a inordenly amount of ammo(unless i use the rare anti-personnal ammo).
I can kill big daddy(not rosie), with the freeze wrench, by just repeatly swinging, because he would freeze over and over till he dies. As for Rosie, the other big daddy, one of the few enemies harder to beat with a wrench or any weapon, is still almost as good as using other weapons. Trust me, I use the wrench most of the game, and use the other powers just for "FUN".
The wrench only get's more powerful as the game goes along. You can even sap health after every hit.
Therefore most of the enemies i kill was using the wrench, and did it easily, I was not scared of any one, the atmosphere of conserving your ammo went out the window, my ammo was constantly maxed out.
The second in-balance is the VITA-Chambers. When you die, you would re-spawn in VITA-Chambers automatically, and the chambers are usually relatively densely packed. Why is this an in-balance? Because the only punishment is less health only 75% max after respawn. So with the wrench imbalance, i would not even waste health packs for big daddies, I repeatly do my smack fest, die, respawn, run back, repeat. Basically I didn't give a shit if I die.
Now would that type of gameplay killing mechanics, still give this a 90+%???
The graphics/sound/story is finely made, but gameplay is where a game is at, it is 50% of a game at least. The game play failed relatively badly comparing to games like Half Life 2, original system shock, etc, i've never was able to use a weapon to dominate so much, but here it is.
I give this 83. Because of superb story/graphics/sound and overall, the wrench was pretty enjoyable to use as a replacement for most of the weapons. Lost marks for mechanics that killed all the atmosphere for me and the zero ammo-managment gameplay with the wrench. |
