Now I never played this on the Amiga or whatever it first came out on...but I did play Pirates! Gold on my trusty Sega Genesis way back when.
It was a great experience then, and I very much looked forward to this new edition. However, I feel they stayed a little too true to the original in terms of gameplay. The ship battles and sword fights are virtually the same, just updated graphics and you get some new options for different types of shot. For a Sid Meir(?) game, I felt it lacked the proper depth.
Sure, the scope is fantastic and the persistently evolving world is a grand achievement, but the player's limited options made this game become redundant and tedious quite quickly.
You could...
capture ships
raid towns
follow a treasure map to lost relative or treasure
repeat
Now, the above is quite fun, at first. But the simplicity in it all gives it no staying power.
I had way more fun with the original, as that was a new experience at the time. This is just the same old game, repackaged with some nice graphics and given a persistenly evolving background world.
Far short of what I expected. |

"not a classic, but still good" by: defiant_ In the end, you will think this game should have been so much more... and you rarely if ever say that about a sid meier's game.
