Stupid AI analysis.

Rating:
89%
by: In-Tel ( March 03, 2003 )
» Pros
-Replayability is high, you can play it over 3 times and it'd be different experience with china/usa/gla.
-GLA's units are pretty innovative and fun.
-The upgrade system adds fun to the game
-Lots of cool upgrades.
-very good gfx/sound/animations.
-Good innovations such as aerial combat, troops in buildings.
-It's totally 3D.

» Cons
-No cut scene movies
-AI is stupid, it seems.
-No good story, so you hardly look forward to next mission. Even tho each mission is fun.

People complain about the AI alot, but the real culprit is EA not explaining what the AI will or will not do. The complain people have is that sometimes the unit will not return fire if it is attacked. But the reality is that if the attack has longer range to attack your unit, then your unit cannot return fire. If people expect the unit to move up to attack, then your unit is prone to be moved by hit and run tactics. They will move out of position and the next time you will be looking where the heck is that unit. What EA did is they have a guard function(as with most strag games) and it will return fire/attack that moves in to that area. This would solve the "stupid AI" problem, but you would have to remember to enable that each time. But I do recall sometimes when it was attacked up close without returning fire(EA's fault) which is also fixed by using guard function.

People also complain about the right mouse button click only de-selects units. But I thoguht it was alright because I use keyboard combination with mouse so I hold Ctrl it attacks or shift/alt etc etc. It didn't bother me. I played C&C's and Warcrafts before. It's just how you adjust/adapt to the system.

BTW I have a AMD2100+/Radeon9700(non-pro)/512 DDR2100. With Highest detail and 1024x768, the game was smooth even with tones and tones of units the way I like it with the GLA.

UPDATE: I just finished GLA on normal difficulty, and it is more like "frigging easy", don't pick normal difficulty or you will be just buliding any random units and still win, no need for any strategy and no fun. I played the USA with Hard difficulty, and it is still quite easy and stratagy is not really needed, I never even used the US's air superiority to win any battle. Currently, I'am playing China with Brutal difficulty. Now this is where you need to deploy your defeneses properly and manage your resources efficiently, or you lose. In prev C&C's I remember the Normal setting is more like Brutal here.

Veteran RTS players should choose Brutal to get any fun out of it, and new players should choose Hard, as normal is just too stupid.

Oh and I'am raising the score to 89 from 85, the more I play it the more I like it.
