The graphics are very good, especially the character models. They look on par with the models in Unreal 2. The animations for the models are also very realistic, even if they move a bit fast, but all games based on the Q3 engine do.
This game makes you feel like you're playing in a movie! Most of the missions are well-designed and fun to play and give you a feeling like you're really part of the action.
The sound effects are absolutely amazing. The guns sound real, and the background war noises add to the general atmosphere. The voice acting is also very good.
The AI is rather good, although it seems to be rather pathetic at avoiding grenades. They hide behind objects to protect themselves, but they some of them run out into the open if you stop shooting.

Not being able to interchange ammo between the scoped and non-scoped version of the same weapon is rather annoying. Running out of ammo for my scoped Kar9k while I build a mountain out of all the Kar9k's I've found just shouldn't happen.
Performance is an issue in some places, especially the first mission of the soviet campaign. I have a Radeon 9700 Pro and I had to turn every graphic option all the way down to pull 5 frames per second on that mission, and that's just unacceptable.
The difficulty of missions varies way too much. Some are very easy, while others (especially those stupid timed defense missions) I had to hide in a corner because there's no other way you can last more than a minute if you don't. And even then, I barely pulled them off. The soviet one was even worse, because your entire squad dies off within 30 seconds, leaving you to defend a building against several hundred troops and around 4 tanks, which constantly pummel the building with shells. I had to hide, prone in a trench, shooting anyone who got near me for the entire length of the defense, and even then I ran out of ammo and ended up with about 10 health at the end.
The endless waves of German soldiers coming at you in certain places is rather unrealistic.

Besides the missions that take several hours to do a 5 minute portion of, Call of Duty is an excellent game. It surpasses Medal of Honor with its cinematic feel, and is going on my list of favorite games. Just the fact that it's so fun to play makes up for all the bad parts.
It was rather interesting that they took 2 scenes right out of Enemy at the Gates, just like Medal of Honor did with Saving Private Ryan. I guess it just adds to the feel of the game. |
