Very good game

Rating:
87%
by: Milton Lemin ( October 25, 2005 )
Experience: 1 Week - 1 Month

» Pros
+Single player is better than expected.
+Game looks better in motion.
+This game is very stable and didn't crash at all.
+Multiplayer is what I mostly wanted and expected.
+Doesn't try to be all the realistic in gameplay. +Sort of like 1996 all over again!
+Offers variety most of the time in single player.
+Vehicles offer variety in single player.
+The stroggification part of single player is a disappointment

» Cons
-Ending was disappointing.
-The Dark Matter gun should be named the BFG!
-The browser is slow and does suck over all. Just like what Jakub said.
-Needs a Team fortress or Rocket Arena MOD.
-Repetitive play here and there. Not near the level of repetitiveness from FEAR fortunately. Mainly toward the middle or end of the game.
-Multiplayer needs more maps.
-NPCS say the same things over and over again.
-For Quake singleplayer soundtracks, nothing beats the Quake 2 soundtrack.

Ah yes! The legendary Quake series just came back in full force starting last week! This series needs no introduction about the previous games in the series and I will not do one because of that reason. I will do an introduction about a few things in this game however. On the single player side, you are Matthew Kane that is part of an elite ground squad known as the Rhino Squad. After Makron has died from the end of Quake 2 single player, the strogg have quickly regrouped together and back up behind a "stronger" boss known as Nexus. They say Makron, but Nexus is really accurate. Your job is to obviously to elimnate the strogg in any way and to especially kill Nexus. Unlike the previous single player games in the Quake series, you go at it with some squad members through some of the game instead of being alone from any other Quake besides this one. Don't get me wrong as you do have to go through parts and chunks of single player alone however. I was expecting single player to be totally like Call of Duty in that sense and I have been incorrect in that sense. You will at times have squads that are medics or a bunch of techs to repair your armor. Don't get too used to it as you tend to get more alone as the game later goes on and more of the soldiers get killed or stroggified. This happens during part of the first level. The only time these soldiers will heal or repair your armor is when there are obviously no strogg in the area or after I did some misson to help them soldiers advance. This game is like Doom 3 in the sense that you will eventually be the only good guy alive fighting the strogg in the end or it feels like that way until you see the ending cinematic. The end was a disappointment because it sounds like there will be a Quake 5 or some Quake 4 missionpack to pick off where this game left off at and the fact it just seemed so typical. Just like where Doom 3 left off at and Betruger is still alive. I expected more form the boss fight. Sure there was two forms of him, but I expected a Makron! Not some boss that moves fast at first and then the core or second form of it doesn't move just respawning enemies with a shield covering the boss. This game has tanks, mech like warrior bots you travel in and probably some other transportation in this game I forgot to mention. This an area where Quake 2 has been surpassed by Quake 4, variety type of levels. Not all of it fits in that category as it seems toward the end or middle of the game, I feel like that I am doing the same level again in a sense. That is fortunately not as long in that sense as F.E.A.R. You will not like single player if you want a single player that is like Half-Life and later. If you miss the mindless, linear killings like I do that is from 1996, this single player game is for you as it is for me.

As for the graphics, they do the job and perfectly illustrate and Quake 2 world in singleplayer and the Quake 3 world in multiplayer. I have expected no less from id Software/Raven in this department. The wow factor may not be here from when Doom 3 was first released when it comes to this area. I feel the jpegs I took for the Quake 4 gallery did not do this game any justice.

As for the sound, the weapons sound like what they should sound like. A lot of the weapons seemed to have just tweaked the sounds of whatever weapon from quake 3 or quake 2 game. They did some obvious tweaking for the better of those weapons. I cannot really recall the music from Quake 4 at all. A lot say the Quake 2 cd had awesome music on it and I have to agree with those people. After 8 years or whatever, it still has the best music on any pc game besides maybe Undying or Painkiller. It is unfortunate Quake 4 is rather forgettable in that department as well. Just like FEAR, but a little less so is the NPCS or enemies saying the samethings over and over again. Not F.E.A.R. bad in that department, still bad enough for me to mention this.

As for Multiplayer, it is quake and what else do you expect me to say? It has it's CTF, regular FFA, Team deathmatch as usual. Nothing fancy just as if it was back in the middle to late 90's. The game here throws realism out of the window which makes multiplayer more fun as well. What prevents the typical fun from multiplayer are a few things. Such as the game browser feeling shot and slow. Acting like it wants to freeze up for five seconds. My machine is more than fast enough to run this game properly. The other problem is Quake 4 could have used some more time in development. Thew main reason why is it because needs more maps. It feels like there are a few maps for all of the different types of multiplayer in which I expected more out of. The maps don't seem to varie much in the size department as well. It would be especially nice if The Dark Zone AKA DM6 from Quake was added along with The Abandoned Base AKA DM3 map from the original Quake into this game along with some other maps. If DM had more multiplayer maps was originally added into this game, I would have no problem giving this game at 90%. While I expect Quake 4 not to add anything to Deathmatch from Quake 3, it would be nice of there was a TFC, Rocket Arena mod or something of that nature to freshen up the multiplayer a little bit.

The summary overall is simple. If you like games that are similar to Half-Life, it is likely that you won't like this game. If you want an old school shooter and play this game with a mindframe from the middle 90's, you will likely enjoy this game a lot. I wouldn't say love the game, but a few shades below that. One thing I forgot to mention before this review is rapped up. The Dark MAtter gun is only a disappointment because it wasn't named BFG. It sure opperates like one except it does massive damage at a shorter range and the fact it glows purple instead of green. If you're wanting an ultra modern game that is groundbreaking in gameplay, look elsewhere as this game doesn't fit that bill in any shape or form.
