Game is intense. Sure, it's like MOHAA, but that's a GOOD thing! (And there isn't a &*!@%$ Sniper Town level screwing up the whole game!)
Graphics are great. No DX9 slowing things down, and you can actually play the game on a moderate 1 GHz system.
Sound is well done and helps immerse you in the campaign.
Russians get their dues.

I don't play much multiplayer, but cheating sucks, and this game doesn't even make a token effort to curtail it.
Game is pretty short: 10-15 hours for most to complete, I would wager.
Game isn't really that different from other WWII shooters of recent history (MOHAA), so if you're tired of the genre, this isn't going to change your mind.

This game is a lot of fun to play. Probably not the greatest game ever (I'm not sure what is!), but if you like the FPS genre, and especially if you think WWII FPS games are a great idea, here is yet another well-crafted game for you to buy. It's not going to turn the world on its head, and pretty much everything you see in this game has been done before, but very few games manage an overall cohesiveness and gaming experience that can rival Call of Duty.
When you consider recent releases like Halo PC and Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, it becomes really difficult to make a case for DirectX 9. Maybe that will change with Doom III and Half-life 2, but for me, this game EASILY looks better than most of the DX9 (and DX8) games that I've played, and it runs a whole lot better than they do as well. I suppose if you have a $4000 gaming monster PC and want to show off what it's capable of, then this game won't really be anything special, but for the rest of us, it fits the bill quite nicely!
Finally, I can't believe how STUPID the other three user reviews have been. One guy gives it 99% Game of the Year. Well, it could be a contender for GotY, but nothing is worth a 99% that I have encountered. Then the next guy gives it a 1%, basically because he hated the first user review. Two wrongs don't make a right, people! Finally, the third review rates it really low because it wasn't original enough for him. I guess that means that no games released in the past three or four years deserve more than 40%, since I haven't seen much that was truly original in that time frame! Anyway, hopefully this will add some semblance of intelligence to the reader reviews of Call of Duty. |
